What We Do
To see why we do what we do, it helps to know the parable of the girl and the starfish.
One day, an old man walking on a beach littered with starfish washed ashore by the high tide came upon a young girl throwing them back into the ocean, one by one. Puzzled, the man asked what she was doing. The girl replied, “I’m saving these starfish.” The old man laughed, saying “There are millions of starfish and one of you. What difference can you make?” The girl picked up a starfish, tossed her into the sea and said, “I made a difference to that one!”
Animal Sanctuary
The sanctuary, located on 48 acres of field and forest, provides a safe haven for animals and humans. As well as those we adopt (chickens, goats, pigs, donkeys), we are mindful of the wild creatures with whom we share land, and of our visitors who seek refuge. The sanctuary is our way of saving starfish, one at a time.
Think Tank
The think tank asks and answers hard questions about our relationships with animals. We engage students, teachers, and the public in creation, conversation, and community to effect gentle change.
While we applaud all savers of sea stars, nobody knows how to bend the curve. The problem is massive and intractable, and civilization is going the wrong way.
It’s crazy to think we can save the world. Yet we try. Once in a while, a tiny change makes a big impact. A butterfly flaps her wings and makes all the difference. So with humor and humility, on behalf of all starfish, we look for levers and ask for help.
